Vintage Island

November 6, 2014 | By Waikiki Magazine Team

The work of artist Nick Kuchar (of Everything is Jake!) is featured at many stores around Waikiki, including Greenroom Hawaii. Waikiki Magazine got a chance to catch up with Kuchar to talk about his work and inspiration.

How do you describe your artwork?

I like to think of what I create as vintage style beach art. Most of my art is digitally sketched and illustrated. The majority of my subject matter is Hawai‘i themed, and the visuals are based on things I’ve experienced such as hikes, bike rides, surf spots and shave ice.

What inspires your work?

I love a lot of the great travel art and signage for the 1940s and ’50s. Artists from that era were able to say so much and create captivating pieces with relatively simple compositions.

What have been some projects that you loved working on?

Some of my favorites have been creating the yearly calendar for Starwood Hotels and shirt designs for Patagonia and Hobie Surfboards.
