Check out the season’s hottest shades and how to keep your manicure looking fresh for weeks!

Fall’s top nail trends include dark twists on French manicures, reverse French tips, nude and pale colors, black reds, metallics and textured designs. But travelers create a sunny parallel universe in Hawai‘i, where a palette of pale to eye-popping pinks and reds rule.

At Abhasa Waikiki Spa at The Royal Hawaiian Resort, nail technician Sayaka Blakeney says most of her customers ask for bright, striking colors they can’t wear in their conservative workplaces.

“Darker colors are more trendy, but people who come here always want bright pink, orange or red year round,” she says, adding that some will also opt for pale pinks in keeping with the natural beach environment. For that, the most popular color at the spa is OPI’s “Passion.”

Those who arrive for manicures make the excuse that they ran out of time to get it done at home, but Sayaka said it makes sense to have a leisurely mani and pedi to recharge after getting off a plane.

For those who don’t want to worry about their nails for the rest of their trip, gel polishes like Shellac and L.U.C.E. are low-maintenance solutions, with nearly 50 shades to choose from.

A full manicure takes about 45 minutes and starts with smoothing the nail, following with a base coat, color and top-coat cured under a UV lamp.

The resulting high-gloss color typically lasts two weeks without chipping—enough to get you back home in style.
