New for the season is Kapena De Lima‘s CD, Cast Your Cares, the latest offering from the Waikiki performer with a distinctive music pedigree. Hawaiian music fans may be familiar with the Jawaiian rhythms of the band Kapena, which is fronted by Kelly Boy De Lima. Kapena, the singer, is Kelly Boy’s son, and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

According to Kapena, the songs on Cast Your Cares are a collection of his personal favorites as well as those that he gets the most requests for at his gigs. “My main inspiration is to share my love for Hawaiian music with visitors and locals who frequent the hotel,” he says.

That love of music shines through in the album’s track list, which is comprised of pop and Hawaiian classics as well as some original songs.

The title track, “Cast Your Cares,” is a tribute to legendary Waikiki performer, Alfred Apaka. “I love the title track … because I am a huge fan of Alfred Apaka,” he says. “I’ve always loved Hawaiian music, especially from the 1950s.”

You can catch Kapena De Lima live, 6:30-9:30 p.m., Sundays and Tuesdays at bin 1901, the lobby bar at Moana Surfrider, (808) 921-4600. Expect to hear an eclectic performance by a talented singer who’ll entertain with selections as varied as Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” as well as tunes by Bruno Mars, Adele and Rihanna.
