Wildest Show in Town

Want a mid-week musical interlude? Head to the Honolulu Zoo with your picnic basket and enjoy mini-concerts by an array of Hawai‘i’s best entertainers. An added bonus: an ‘ukulele giveaway at each concert! ‘HONU BY THE SEA’

Fresh off a performance at the Smithsonian, “Honu by the Sea” is a Hawai‘i-based musical about Kainoa, whose wish to spend a day underwater is granted. Mangoes at the Moana

Ukulele Festival
July 20
The instrument of choice in Hawai‘i is the ‘ukulele, and this event showcases international musicians, talented ‘ukulele players from around the globe, and an ‘ukulele orchestra comprised of more than 800 students. The free event at Kapi‘olani Park will run from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. with both children and kama‘aina taking the stage. www.ukulelefestival.org

The Mayjah Rayjah
July 25-26
Part concert, part social gathering, The Mayjah Rayjah has grown in popularity with each year. Bands and musicians such as Common Kings, Nesian Nine, Rebel SoulJahz and Anuhea take to the Waikiki Shell stage during this two-day music festival. www.tmrmusicfestival.com

Tinman Triathlon
July 27, 5:20 a.m.

China’s 30th Annual Longboard Surfing Classic
July 31-August 3
Hosted by legendary south shore beach boy, China Uemura, this surfing contest benefits his China Uemura Surfing Foundation, which has raised more than $200,000 over the years for various charities. Competitors vie in Pro-Am, SUP, amateur and the special “Blah-Lah” division reserved for surfers with a 40″ waist. www.chinauemura.com

Jack Johnson in Concert
August 1
Jack Johnson comes home with a concert at Waikiki Shell, in support of his sixth studio album, From Here To Now To You, which debuted No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart—his fourth chart-topping album to date. All proceeds from the concert will benefit Johnson’s Kokua Hawai‘i Foundation.

Na Hula Festival
August 2-3, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival
August 17, Noon-6 p.m.
The 32nd annual music festival will highlight up to 15 of Hawai‘i’s greatest musicians in the slack key guitar genre. This year, the state will be celebrating 184 years of the distinct art form. The event at Kapi‘olani Park will also feature food vendors, island crafters, merchandise booths and more. Okinawan Festival

The 32nd annual Okinawan Festival is Hawai‘i’s largest ethnic festival. The event starts off at Kapi‘olani Park with a taiko drum performance.
