Chasing Rainbows

May 6, 2014 | By Sarah Pacheco

Rainbows are a near-daily sighting in Hawai‘i, and at Rainbow Drive-In, you’re guaranteed to find a treasure waiting for you.

Just remember the phrase “ROY G BIV,” and keep an eye peeled for the multi-colored panels on the building at 3308 Kana‘ina Ave. just off Kapahulu Ave. That’s where you’ll find some of the most ono-licious—and most affordable—plate lunches around.

Rainbow Drive-In has been serving up local favorites like loco moco, chili, saimin and fried rice for more than 50 years. The family-owned-and-operated eatery and its unique creations—be sure to try its popular Mix Plate plate lunch ($7.95)—have been featured on national television shows for Food Network and Cooking Channel, as well as in national publications such as Food & Wine magazine.

You can even take a taste of the Rainbow home with you. The recently opened Rainbow Tiki logo shop, located next door, sells T-shirts, caps, bags, stickers, chili seasoning and rub, buttermilk pancake mix, Mom’s Mix, two kinds of Hawai‘i-style chili pepper water and other gift items.
