Sundown to Sunrise

September 5, 2014 | By Waikiki Magazine Team

Day or night, THE MODERN HONOLULU’s Sunrise Pool shines through eclectic edibles and dreamy views.

Ultra mod meets romantic at Sunrise Pool. Anchored to sleek luxury resort THE MODERN HONOLULU, this recreational swimming hole—affixed adjacent to a well-stocked watering hole—makes an idyllic retreat.

Lounge in a daybed (reservations required) on a teak wood deck framed in tropical shade trees, or drift beneath a canopy of bougainvillea to sip the daily special. Whether afternoon rays or a faux evening glow reflects off the water, Sunrise radiates sophistication with edge.

Waterscapes and docked boats to one side, skyline to the other, MODERN HONOLULU’s organic artisanal menu pairs well with alfresco vistas. From island-grown salads to internationally inspired small plates and mixers, any time of day is delicious poolside.

The Classic Eggs Benedict, a breakfast frontrunner, is served 7 to 11 a.m. MODERN’s spin on the benny toasts then tops English muffin halves with thick slabs of Canadian bacon, two blanc poached eggs and a creamy, butter-yellow Hollandaise sauce.

“The house-made sauce that is hand whisked is what truly makes this dish. We include all local fresh brown organic eggs,” shares Chef Scott Toner.

Between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m., the All Day Dining menu boasts inventive pupus, mains and desserts. Regular live music by local artists amps the environs.

Après-midi guests match succulent ‘Ahi Tartare and other snacks with mixed beverages. “Locally caught Grade 1 ‘ahi tuna is brought in daily for our take on the ‘Ahi Tartare,” says Chef Rowell Ganotisi. “Chunky avocado, créme fraîche, wasabi tobiko, freshly fried Okinawan sweet potato and house-made ponzu are used as well.”

Special-priced beverages served during Happy Hour, 4 to 7 p.m. Here’s to sundown at Sunrise.
