Top Model: Q&A with Jessica Michibata

September 4, 2014 | By Waikiki Magazine Team

Japanese model, TV host, actress and brand ambassador Jessica Michibata is no stranger to Hawai‘i. She frequently vacations in the islands and in 2013 she was a special guest for the grand re-opening of T Galleria Hawaii by DFS in Waikiki. Just this past June, Michibata participated in the Honolulu Ekiden & Music relay race with her own “Team Jessica” that started and ended at Kapi‘olani Park. Waikiki Magazine got a chance to catch up with this international star and find out some of her favorite things to do in Waikiki!

How did you get into modeling?

My older sister Karen started modeling and the people from the agency scouted me.

What is your favorite thing about modeling?

I get to travel and meet all these exciting people.

What other projects are you working on?

I just filmed my first yoga DVD with Ken Harakuma. The movie I’m co-starring in, “Shanti Days,” is coming out this fall.

What is special to you about Hawai‘i?

Hawai‘i is just a special place for everyone! I don’t know anyone who comes to Hawai‘i and does not like it. There are many things I love about Hawai‘i, but one of the things I love the most is the nature and the culture of Hawai‘i.

What are your favorite places to shop in Waikiki?

I love Belle Vie and Crush for cosmetic hunting, and I also love Pualani for great bikinis and accessories.

What interests or causes do you support?

I have supported UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) since I was 20. I visited a refugee camp in Nepal back in 2011. I’m also very interested in ocean conservation. I really think it’s very important that we protect the marine life and their sea.

Who are your favorite fashion designers?

Hard to choose! I love Ralph Lauren for beautiful dresses. I wear a lot of rag & bone, but when I’m in Hawai‘i you will see me wearing Tiare Hawaii and Lani Lau a lot!

What three beauty products are your must-haves in your beauty routine?

Definitely a good face oil, rose water and facial scrub.
