Local gifts and produce sprout at Hyatt Regency Waikiki’s Farmers Market.

For the freshest, ripest and most nutritious produce and artisan food products, go to the source. In the case of Hyatt Regency Waikiki’s Farmers Market, the source comes to you.

Putting the hotel on the map as a destination for locally grown goods, the bi-weekly market, which takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-8 p.m., boasts a verdant array of vegetables and highly sought-after tropical fruits that thrive in Hawai‘i’s fertile volcanic soils and mild climate. Thursday’s market even includes a Beer Garden.

Pineapples, mangoes, apple bananas, guavas, papayas and jackfruits are just some examples of the offerings. Who could resist the lure of striking colors, kaleidoscopic flavors and a playground of textures?

Not Sven Ullrich, the hotel’s executive chef. He becomes a kid in a candy shop at a farmers’ market. The market, after all, is the fruit of his and general manager David Nadelman’s labors.

Think a farmers’ market is only for those with a kitchen at their disposal? Not this one. It’s totally traveler-friendly. “The market is purposefully designed to provide gifts to take home,” Ullrich says.

Gifts like Aikane Plantation coffee, Hawaiian Nougat and Waialua Estate-grown chocolate can be easily thrown in a suitcase and survive the trip. But if you’re hungry, ready-toeat items such as seasoned, cubed fresh island fish poke, Naked Cow Dairy cheese and fresh-baked bread from Ba-Le are available—perfect for a picnic lunch!
