Light Fantastic

September 5, 2014 | By Waikiki Magazine Team

The world’s first 3-D pool mapping light show projects nightly—right here in Waikiki at Sheraton Waikiki’s Helumoa Playground, next to RumFire. Graphics and images created to learn about Hawai‘i’s culture and history in a unique and contemporary way are cast onto the 200,000-gallon superpool’s surface. The reflections from the 7,503-square-foot pool’s water will add an additional component to the animation—more vibrant color on the canvas. Two different light show stories are presented nightly: “Helumoa—the birth of Hawai‘i” and “Helumoa—the legendary story of Waikiki.” Some of the spectacular, projected imagery in the shows includes a display of hot lava from volcanic eruptions, the art of hula as the Hawaiian way of storytelling and the introduction of surfing in Waikiki. Shows begin every night at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., and are open to the public for viewing.
