Take a Shot

Ready, aim, fire… at Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club

Waikiki has a thriving gun club scene, where marksmen and novices alike can tap their inner Eastwood and pump a few rounds into a harmless target. That’s right: You can shoot an arsenal of guns within Waikiki.

Secluded and tucked away on the 4th floor of Royal Hawaiian Center is Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club, Hawai‘i’s largest indoor shooting range.

“Most of [our customers] come to us to experience the exciting sport of shooting in a controlled environment,” says Aiko Tanaka, general manager of Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club, who has 19 years of firearms experience. “All of our firearms are tethered.”

Tanaka continues, “Then they soon realize that the sport of shooting a gun is not just about an excitement or a thrill. Actually, the more excited you are, you become less accurate in shooting and hitting a target. Just like golf and archery, to excel in this sport, it requires you to stay calm and focused.”

Clientele also includes visitors from countries where gun shooting is very restricted or almost completely illegal, such as Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and some European countries, according to Tanaka.

“At our club, we cater to all levels, from first-time shooters to advanced shooters,” Tanaka says. “All non-members initially must complete one of our shooting courses. Each course comes with a safety briefing conducted by our instructor.”

The experience at Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club is comfortable and very educational, allowing first-time shooters to leave with a feeling of accomplishment, fulfillment and success. Being able to take home the targets also is a great reminder (and souvenir) of the time shooting.

With safety as a top priority, Royal Hawaiian Shooting Club is the place to go to learn about firearms and accurate shooting in a controlled environment with professionals and instructors … right here in Waikiki!
